The aim of the Friday series is to present speakers on a wide range of topics of general interest to an audience drawn from the university and the community. The series, which began in October 2000, has featured book launches, readings and presentations on various cultural, scientific, political, historical, legal and philosophical subjects. Most events take the form of a presentation by one speaker, but once or twice each year we devote a whole afternoon to a theme, with readings, talks and often music as well. These have included anniversary tributes to George Orwell, Rabindranath Tagore and Robert Burns, and literary/musical events such as Jane Austen’s Music and Bloomsday. Another popular regular event is History at the Movies, part of History SA’s About Time history festival, with historic 16mm film screenings on a chosen theme. Fridays at the Library events are often presented in collaboration with other organisations, including History SA, Australian Book Review, the Flinders Music Advisory Committee, the Australian Institute of International Affairs.
The Heap Mannam Collection consists of antique furniture, household items, books and works of art. Of particular note are the many examples of high Victorian decorative arts with oriental influences, displaying an English interest in distant imperial territories. Dr John and Mrs Isobel Mannam very generously donated this collection of valuable artefacts to the University over a period of time in honour of their parents. For more informationplease visit
